See Our Article In Southern Distinction

Gallery artist Cathy McIntire's painting, "Swan" was chosen for the December cover of Southern Distinction. An article about the gallery is in the issue which features the work of artists David Siffert, Kendall Boggs, and McIntire, three of the fourteen talented artists of Art of Oconee. In the coming months we will feature information about all our artists. Each has a unique style and creative way of expressing their ideas in the art they produce.

Getting Ready For Art Ramble

We are so happy to be a part of the Art Ramble this year! The more galleries we have in the area, the more support we get from the community and the more support we can give to each other. Sherry Turner has taken the lead for Art of Oconee in organizing this event and is responsible for coordinating advertising, demonstration schedules, food and drink, and a host of other details that will make this 2 day event a blast for everyone who experiences it!

Speaking of demos, we will have four of our artists painting in the gallery on Friday and Saturday. Gail Vail will be painting in oil, as will Cathy McIntire. It will be great to get a glimpse of the process of oil painting in person. David Siffert will give us all an idea of what gouache (pronounced gwash) is all about, and Kendall Boggs will be creating one of her Angels on canvas. Find out how all that texture gets on the canvas!

The gallery is full of gorgeous paintings, and we have brought in lots of smaller sizes, matted prints and originals, and even greeting cards to accomodate every budget. Kelly Clower and Ellen Cowne have both been busy creating gorgeous new jewelry pieces, and Mike Johnson has been working extra hours to keep his wood turnings in the galleries. His jewelry boxes get snapped up fast!

Gail Vail's book, Seasons on Lake Oconee has been printed and is currently available at the gallery. Seven of our artists are included in the book: Kendall Boggs, Shannon Candler, Nan McGarity, Cathy McIntire, David Siffert, Sherry Turner, and of course, Gail Vail. Get your copy autographed by one (or all!) during the Ramble, since most of us will be at the gallery.

Briar Patch Festival

Our tent and art in Eatonton!

Saturday we took our art to Eatonton to participate in the Briar Patch Festival. Jewelry artist Ellen Cowne is a veteran of the outdoor festival scene, so she brought her own tent (and experience) for us to display art from the gallery. (By the way, Ellen and Kelly Clower have both been juried in to the inaugural “Art at the Rock”, a Juried Art Show and Marketplace at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton on November 21.) Even though the weather was a little drizzly, the turnout was great and we received tons of compliments on our work, along with assurances by many to come and see our gallery soon!

Art Walk at Lake Oconee Village

Our first ever Art Walk at Lake Oconee Village was a huge success! We partnered with Magnolia Gallery and Aurum Jewelry and Art for an evening of art, wine, and fun for all who came. Each gallery had a theme and new artwork to see. We showcased our newest "Small Works" by all our artists on two wonderful display towers placed inside the gallery. Sherry Turner, Mike Johnson, and Gail Vail worked on the displays, lighting, hanging and all the visual aspects of the gallery. Kendall Boggs and Gail Vail provided lots of sweet and salty goodies (which everybody loved!), and Sherry made sure we had a good supply of wine and drinks for all our guests.

We've had lots of great feedback on the event. Several visitors came more than once to see the gallery and enjoy the fun atmosphere that only 14 artists who work and play together can provide. Nan McGarity provided some first hand art-making by painting outside the gallery during the event. Gail Vail created quite a buzz when she unveiled her new book, Seasons on Lake Oconee. She's had tremendous response before the book has even been delivered! We are excited for her and all the artists and writers who are included in this wonderful example of the lake country's creative talents!

We had 6 sales that night -- Shannon Candler's St. Simon's painting sold and all 5 of Sherry Turner's newest pieces sold! WOW. There is also interest in some other pieces and lots of good contacts made and new entries in our guest book. Two of our artists, David Siffert and Cathy McIntire, have a show at Aurum that premiered on the same night and it too was a big success with strong interest in several pieces. Chris at Aurum came by to let us know that customers requested we make this an annual event. Maybe we can do it in late spring and again next October -- third Thursday!

Our next event is Saturday, Oct. 31 (10 am to 3 pm) in Eatonton for the Briar Patch Festival. We will have a booth filled with gorgeous examples of our Art of Oconee artists' work. Come see us!

Come Meet Martha Hall Foose!

We want to make sure you know what's up next at the gallery! Check back often to see our Events listings at the top right side of our page!
For instance, we are excited to host a booksigning event for Martha Hall Foose. She will be at the gallery to sign her new cookbook, "Screen Doors and Sweet Tea", (which has won several awards already!) and she'll also prepare a sample of her delicious Southern cuisine. We're expecting a big turnout as we have had several newspaper articles announcing the event! Martha is a warm and gracious southern gal in addition to being a gifted chef, and we are very happy that she is here!
